Visiting the dentist regularly is important for children. While brushing can clean teeth, only a dentist can remove hard plaque and tartar. A dentist is also the only professional who can accurately determine a child's oral health.
However, most children do not quite welcome a visit to the dentist, and their feeling is quite understandable. After seeing dark corners, dimly lit rooms, wicked medical instruments, and ominous-looking bottles of medicine, a dentist's clinic can be intimidating to children. Thus, if you are a dentist, it is important to make your workspace child-friendly. Here are some tips to make kids more enthusiastic in letting you examine their teeth:
First, have your office painted in lively colours. White is nice, as well as pastel colours such as sky blue and baby pink. Try using bright shades of primary colours like yellow and red as accents since these can help make your office look warmer and more inviting. In addition, use plenty of cheerful coloured lights.
Paint or attach decals of wholesome cartoon characters and child-level artworks such as balloons, animals, fun houses, and flowers. Children love to stay in places that they associate with fun, laughter, and play, so adding these elements would help to make them feel more comfortable. Also consider adding a small play pen or activity area with safe, fun kiddie toys. So, when you are attending a patient, children can have fun rather than nervously wait for their turn to be in the dentist's chair.
Finally, keep medicine bottles and dentist equipment away from sight. Children are usually afraid of dentists, and you would not want to increase their fear by letting them see what is going to be stuck in their mouths. Make sure that these tools are tucked away in drawers or cabinets if you are not using them.
