A protective mouth guard is a must have for everyone who plays contact sports like soccer, ice hockey, football, basketball, and boxing. However, even those into noncontact sports and recreational activities should wear it too as accidents can happen during any physical pursuit. For example, a fall from a bike can cause tooth loss and damage mouth and tongue tissues. So, no matter how risk-free your chosen sport may seem to be, never be too confident to overlook your safety; always protect your dental health.
Meanwhile, there are three kinds of mouth guards available. One works differently from the other, so you should be able to identify what is the right piece for you.
The first type is the stock mouth protector. This is a "preformed” ready-to-wear piece. It comes with an affordable price tag and can be bought at most sporting goods shops and department stores. However, while this mouth guard is inexpensive and easy to find, it provides little protection because little can be done to adjust its fit. So, if you are looking for more protection, pay extra money for the "boil and bite” type.
The boil and bite mouth guard offers a better fit than the former. It is made of thermoplastic material, which flexibly follows the shape of the mouth around teeth when placed in hot water. It can also be bought in sporting goods stores, so there is no need to visit a dentist.
On the other hand, if you want a piece that provides the best fit, a custom-fitted mouth protector is the right option. You need to be ready to pay a sizeable amount though because, due to the extra time and work involved in its design, it can be pretty expensive. The cost is worth it, however, for it provides the most comfort and protection.
